Physiology of Peritoneal Dialysis

چکیده
Peter G. Blake John T. Daugirdas Peritoneal dialysis is the method of renal replacement therapy used by approximately 100,000 patients worldwide. In particular, since the introduction of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) approximately two decades ago, its popularity has increased greatly, mainly because of i ts simplicity, convenience, and relatively low cost. Before describing the cl inical application of peritoneal dialysis and its potential complications, i t is important to have an understanding of the underlying anatomy and physiology on which peritoneal dialysis is based.

Correlational studies on insulin resistance and leptin gene polymorphisms in peritoneal dialysis patients
Objective(s):The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between insulin resistance (IR) and leptin (LEP) gene polymorphisms in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. Materials and Methods: From July 1, 2011 to August 1, 2011, patients who received chronic PD were chosen and divided into three groups (DM, high HOMR-IR, and low HOMR-IR). Two PCR products of LEP were sequenced and aligne...
متن کاملThe Comparative Survey of Life Quality in Renal Transplant Recipients, Peritoneal Dialysis, and Hemodialysis Patients in Kerman in the Year 2013
Background & Objective: According to the World Health Organization (WHO) definition, quality of life is a state of complete physical, mental, and social health not merely the absence of the disease. End stage renal disease and its treatment affect patients' quality of life. Therefore, the present study surveyed the quality of life in renal transplant recipients, hemodialysis, and peritoneal di...
متن کاملSupportive treatment of delayed perforated colon due to peritoneal dialysis catheterization
Background: One of uncommon complications in patients with peritoneal catheter is colon rupture which usually occurs during catheter insertion. In this paper, we present a case of delayed perforated colon following insertion of peritoneal catheter. Case presentation: A 37-year-old man was suffering from chronic renal failure (CRF). Nine months after peritoneal catheterization, peritoneal dialy...
متن کاملCytotoxic Glucose Degradation Products in Fluids for Peritoneal Dialysis
During the standard heat sterilization process of the lactate–buffered peritoneal dialysis solutions, glucose (an osmotic active substance) degrades to form compounds called glucose degradation products which are cytotoxic and affect the survival of the peritoneal membrane. This case presentation is based on an observation of 224 aseptic peritonitis cases of unknown etiology. For the purpose of...
متن کاملIsolation of interstitial fluid and demonstration of local proinflammatory cytokine production and increased absorptive gradient in chronic peritoneal dialysis.
In peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients, the frequent exposure to "unphysiological" dialysis fluids elicits a chronic state of a low-grade peritoneal inflammation leading to interstitial matrix remodeling and angiogenesis. Proinflammatory cytokines are important regulators involved in this inflammatory process that ultimately leads to dysfunction of the peritoneum as a dialysis membrane. We aimed ...
